The 100 Word Challenge

What is 100WC?

‘The unread story is not a story; it is little black marks on wood pulp. The reader, reading it, makes it live: a live thing, a story.’ Ursula K. Le Guin

It is a weekly creative writing challenge for children under 16 years of age. Each week a prompt is given, which can be a picture or a series of individual words and the children can use up to 100 words to write a creative piece. This should be posted on a class blog and then linked to the 100 Word Challenge blog. The link is usually open from midnight on Wednesdays until midnight the following Tuesdays.

By setting a limited word count with a focused theme and a guaranteed audience beyond the class teacher, children have far greater motivation for writing. Those who are reluctant writers feel safe with only 100 words to write, whilst those more advanced writers can really extend themselves with the word restriction.

  1. Dear Santa,
Please read my letter which is attached to my Christmas list. Firstly, I think you achieve a lot in one night,as it is necessary that you deliver all of the presents to the children on time! What is the average speed of your sleigh and does the different temperatures Interfere with how fast you get around the world? Is Rudolph’s red nose your symbol? You must have really big tough muscles and shoulders from carrying all of the sacks of toys for the children! The toys you bring are more than sufficient, you always do a thorough job. You must have a variety of toys for the children to have their individual sacks of different toys. Flying high over churches and cemeteries. I wish I could spot you up in the sky! Anyway, please can I have a yacht but I do not want any vegetables! I’m sure You can guarantee that I will get my presents for Christmas as it would be awkward if I did not but I promise I will not harass you if I do not! I hope none of your reindeer are a hindrance to you on the big night, ha ha! It would definetly be a privilege to meet you as you have the best profession in the world! So please can you leave me your signature , as you must be one of the most ancient people in the world! I hope your stomach doesn’t get to full from the mince pies left out for you! And I hope that you can indentify all of the houses. Finally, please can you remember all of the soldiers away from their families this Christmas time.

  2. Dear Santa,

It is a privilege to be writing to you right now though I’m definite others will want to write as well so I’m going to say everything in 100 words.
First I want a yacht , a sufficient one so it gets through the water with ease. I also want some weights, build my muscle, change my identity.most of all I want it to snow I know it gets cold and the temperature drops fast but snow really is fun to play in! It has been a pleasure writing to you and I hope I get what I asked for

  3. Dear joe
This is an invatation to my birthday party. There will be a great amount of people coming. About forty. One of them will be my neighbour. Even though you might not know many people, you can talk to me anytime you want. If you get bored, there will be loads of leisure activities that you can do. You can also frequently pay visits after the party. If you don’t recognise my house then it Is the one with all of the biggest balloons and birthday banners on. It would be very nice of you to reply to this letter but if you can’t then that will be ok. All you have to do is show up at the party. I hope you can come. Bye
    Yours truly
